US 101 Trinidad Area Access Improvement Project

The US 101 Trinidad Area Access Improvement Project aims to balance infrastructure development with tribal concerns by integrating cultural preservation, enhancing safety and access, ensuring economic opportunities, and maintaining ongoing dialogue between the tribe and project stakeholders.

The US 101 Trinidad Area Access Project includes plans for connection of tribal lands, improving traffic flow, safety, and access for the tribal community and region while providing measures to mitigate potential impacts to the local community. The tribe has a vested interest in the project, as it directly impacts their lands, cultural resources, and overall way of life.

Key mitigative measures are being implemented to address the tribal and community concerns: 

  • Cultural and Environmental Preservation

    Archaeological Surveys: The project will include detailed archaeological surveys to identify and protect any cultural resources that may be impacted during construction. If significant cultural or archaeological sites are found, special protective measures or avoidance strategies will be implemented.

    Environmental Protection: There will be efforts to protect the local ecosystems, including mitigation for impacts to wetlands, wildlife habitats, and natural resources that the tribe relies on for cultural practices.

  • Traffic Safety and Access

    Improved Traffic Flow: The project aims to reduce congestion and improve access to Trinidad and nearby tribal lands. By reducing traffic bottlenecks and improving road safety, the tribe’s members will have easier and safer access to their lands and resources.

    Pedestrian and Bicycle Access: Plans for enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure will ensure that tribal members and others in the community have safe and accessible routes through the area, promoting non-motorized transportation.

    Connection to Tribal Lands: A specific focus will be on ensuring that any new or improved roads or access points will not hinder tribal access to its lands, residences, or businesses.

  • Community Engagement and Collaboration

    The project includes a commitment to ongoing engagement with the community to address concerns throughout the environmental phase, construction and post-construction phases.

  • Employment and Economic Opportunities

    As part of the project, there may be opportunities for tribal members and community members to participate in construction or related employment, which can bring economic benefits to the tribe and region.

  • Land Use Considerations

    Land Use Impact Assessment: In cases where the project directly impacts tribal land or resources, and/or, community land or resources there will be efforts to minimize the footprint and impact. 

    Traffic Diversion and Management Plans: Strategies to minimize the impact of construction on daily life and ensure the community access during any road closures or diversions are also part of the mitigation measures.
