The Rancheria Reaffirms Tribal Natural Resource Management
Partnership between Trinidad Rancheria and Cal Poly Humboldt reaffirms Trinidad Rancheria's sovereignty and inherent rights to protect and manage their own natural habitat and resources
We are delighted to announce a significant milestone for the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria (Trinidad Rancheria) and California State Polytechnic University Humboldt (Cal Poly Humboldt). A 5-Year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been approved and executed, underscoring a commitment to a fruitful partnership that recognizes and supports Trinidad Rancheria as a sovereign, self-governing Nation. This collaborative endeavor reinforces Trinidad Rancheria's inherent rights to protect and manage the natural habitat and resources within its jurisdiction. The MOU also aims to bolster open communication, promoting collaboration and innovation for a sustainable future.
The partnership is not just about paperwork. It is about actionable steps towards tangible outcomes that positively impact our community. As part of the MOU, Trinidad Rancheria and Cal Poly Humboldt are embarking on a project funded by the California Climate Action Seed Grants. This project will focus on strengthening the resilience of Northern California Tribal fisheries to climate change through capacity building and research on priority marine species. In addition, Trinidad Rancheria looks forward to further collaborative projects with Cal Poly Humboldt as they continue to expand their new Marine and Climate Resiliency Program. This MOU is more than an agreement; it's a commitment to our people, our ocean, and our future.
