Trinidad Pier Reconstruction Project
Trinidad Pier Reconstruction improves public use and protects marine life.
The Trinidad Pier has been owned and operated by Trinidad Rancheria since 2000. From 2011-2012, in partnership with the City of Trinidad, Bureau of Indian Affairs, State Water Resources Control Board, California Coastal Conservancy, and others, our Tribe directed and managed the reconstruction of the Trinidad Pier to correct structural deficiencies, improve utilities for the benefit of the public, and increase protection of the giant kelp forests that are designated as Areas of Biological Significance (ASBS). The ASBS designation is intended to afford special protection to marine life through prohibition of waste discharges within ASBS areas.
Through this project, we successfully mitigated storm water pollution into Trinidad Bay, improved water quality conditions, removed toxic creosote-treated piles from the old pier, provided additional habitat for the biological community in the ASBS, and removed marine debris. The Trinidad Pier and harbor are the economic epicenter of the Trinidad area and through the reconstruction and ongoing maintenance of the pier, the Rancheria affirmed our dedication to maintaining the facility as a safe, commercial, recreational, historical, and scenic draw for local businesses and community members while serving as stewards of the ocean.
