Proposition 50: Clean Beaches Initiative

Trinidad Rancheria improves water quality at the Trinidad harbor and beach

In collaboration with the State Water Resource Control Board, Trinidad Rancheria led the planning, design, and construction of a wastewater treatment plan, public restrooms, and retaining wall to reduce bacterial contamination at the Trinidad harbor and beach. The Trinidad Head ASBS monitoring program revealed that there had been a number of exceedances of the natural water quality guidelines, and harmful levels of bacteria that were a health and safety concern for beach-goers and the nearshore living marine resources in the ASBS. Our Tribe responded promptly to this finding and we successfully managed a $1,500,000 grant award to improve our water quality and reduce the adverse impacts of wastewater discharge and uncontrolled run-off from a failing septic system.
